Abruptum - Evil Genius (Black Lodge)
With the controversial black noise terrorists Abruptum officially declared dead a few years back, Black Lodge decided it was finally time to unearth Evil Genius, the long out of print compilation of the duo’s first three infamous releases (1990’s Hextum Galaem Zeloq and The Satanist Tunes demos and 1991’s Evil EP). Love them or hate them, it’s hard to argue that the mysterious members, All and It, produced some of the most seriously bleak and fucked up black metal of those early years (though whether they did it well is another story), and these recordings do not suffer any lack of dark, abstract guitar compositions complemented by inhuman burp-and-gurgle growls, high-pitched shrieks, increasingly prevalent haunting synths, tortured moaning (though in the case of “Hostes Orco Hostium Dis Manibus Pacis Ruptores Ultioni,” decidedly sexual), and random blasts of distorted blasting, all wrapped up in a depressing, doomy ambiance that is so often attempted by up and coming acts in the present. Personal preference aside, it’s nice to have these tracks available again.
