Lorn - Towards the Abyss of Disease (Eerie Art)
Italy’s Lorn return with the follow-up to 2004’s The Path to the Black Infinity with another solid slab of melodic mid-paced black metal. The opening title track kicks off with a nice ridiculously catchy tune that at first doesn’t really fit in with what you would expect from such a bare-bones black metal track, but soon it begins to sound like an ale-house rally and its impossible to keep your fist from pumping and almost wishing there was a great chorus to sing along with instead of Tomb’s harsh static shriek. “Watching The Landscapes Of Silent Nothing” picks up the pace with fast blasting without compromising those great hooks, and “Trolls, Hordes, and Axes” continues the awesome fuzzed out bliss-fest. The appropriately titled “Hypnotic Snowfall” is a surprisingly adequate take on instrumental atmospheric black metal, and things on a high fast note with the tortuous “Raetia.” This is one of the best examples of a band combining their harsh and almost pop-like melodic moments I’ve heard in some time, so fans of all things uncompromising and catchy take note!
